Krabi Town
Situated on the banks of
the Krabi River, this erstwhile fishing port,
retains much of its traditional air. Khao Khanap
Nam, two hills 100-metre high paralleling the
Krabi River, are the symbol of the town. Steps
lead to caves with stalactites and stalagmites.
A large number of human skeletons, of immigrants
who died in floods, have been found here. To visit
them, take long-tail boat from Chaofa Pier, just
15 minutes. Along the way is mangrove forest.
Shell Fossil Beach (Susan Hoi)
At one time, the site of
a large swamp full of numerous freshwater shells.
When seawater flowed into the swamp, limestone
in the seawater coated the shells until they became
as one. When the land rose, this 40 centimeters
thick shell encrusted limestone emerged as the
fossil shell-beach and stretched out to the sea.
It is believed that Susan Hoi is 75 million years
old.
Than Bok Khorani National
Park
The park, consisting of limestone Mountains, verdant
tropical forest, caves and beautiful islands,
is well-known for its different species of trees
growing around a large natural pool after which
the park is named, This park houses hundreds of
birds and is an ideal place for bird watching
and trekking, At the north end of the pool is
a foot-print of Lord Buddha caved in wood near
the shrine of Chao Pho To Yuan - To Chong. Close
by is Tham Phi Hua To or Big-headed Ghost Cave
named after unusually large skulls discovered
there. Most interesting sights are the numerous
red and black rock paintings depicting humans,
animal and various limbs and organs.
Khao Phanom Bencha National Park
The park covering Amphoe Ao Luk, Amphoe Khao Phanom
and Amphoe Muang consists of verdant forests,
streams, waterfalls and caves. It is home to all
kinds of wildlife. Camping facilities are available.
Wat Klong Thom
Museum
It is an interesting archaeological site, featuring
various kinds of artifacts. Discovered within
the area were beads, stone tools, stone and earthen
ornaments in animal shapes. The beads are about
5,000 years old.
